February 2009 Archives

This morning I finally got in the one-hour bike time trial on the schedule from earlier in week. Since the Wisconsin weather hasn't allowed me to get outside, I once again was on the trainer for the duration. I've never done a pure time trial before, so I didn't know what to expect. I planned to keep things in check in the beginning and build from there.

The hour was a success and I finished strong with my legs quivering a bit, though not as much as I thought they would be. I got off the bike and spent the morning thinking I hadn't gone as hard as I could, until I got up from my desk to get some lunch. It took a bit for me to get my balance and climbing some simple stairs were more effort than it should've been. Guess I did something right.

Five weeks left until IM NOLA 70.3. Fun!

We've been finishing up a bunch of projects this week in anticipation of getting the house assessed to refinance our mortgage. In the closet that had the leak that started it all, I got around to finishing the mudding, while Kris finished painting a corner that had gone naked since we moved in almost three years ago. I repaired the wall from our new bathroom window and Kris painted it. I just got done replacing trim that the previous home owners seemed to have forgot. We hired someone to repair the wall damaged during our front door replacement. And then, we hired someone to fix the cracks and paint the high walls of our stairs.

Day one was promising with some cracks replaced, but others were missed. Day two included the missed cracks and sanding. I could tell they sanded because of the grime that was left behind. It was everywhere. No one closed doors to rooms that weren't being worked on, and it was obvious that no covers nor plastic had been placed at strategic locations. A chat with the painter revealed that they had in fact cleaned (at least that's what he said.) Nonetheless, I spent two hours cleaning up everything that was left behind.

This really makes sense given the outward appearance of our hired painter. Constantly smelling of smoke (you would think working in paint fumes would be enough) he doesn't carry himself like an organized man would. He nearly forgot his jacket within our house on a 10-degree night. Notes are lost or left at home. Paint colors are forgot.

Owning a home and keeping up with the maintenance teaches many lessons. The most recent is that if you interview a someone that doesn't look like they can keep their own house clean, chances are they won't keep yours clean either.

Lots of awesome triathlon-related things happened in my life today. They included:

  • Arrival of my training plan from Will Smith. The plan takes me all the way through to IM NOLA. It includes fun things like:
    • running in place for a minute or two during long indoor trainer rides,
    • 3+ hour trainer rides,
    • running with really fast and really nice people, but
    • best of all, I don't have to think about what my next workout will be. By following the plan, I can concentrate specifically on each workout and push myself to get better with every stroke, pedal, and stride. Gone is the time wasted about what to do as well as the unconcious tendancy to only do workouts that I can handle rather than push my limits.
  • Actually speaking to Will Smith about the training plan and opportunities to train with others. He also agreed to help me by building my bike and allowing me to look over his shoulder and learn all the little cool things. Big kudos and thanks to Will for his help and support. (Plus, his Kiwi accent is fun to listen to.)
  • Arrival of my first bit of sponsored gear: my 2XU Elite E:1 wetsuit. The best part is that my size, "medium strong" has a nice ring to it. Now I just to live up to the "strong" part. I haven't tried it on just yet, but it looks really fast just laying on the table.
  • Finally, talking with my Evotri teammates as we plan for IM NOLA and the rest of the awesome 2009 ahead.

I hope to get more spornsors' gear in the coming days, and with any luck, a bike by the end of the month!
